You have decided that it is best for your trucking business to get out of the PEO model and back into the traditional model with payroll, work comp etc. all managed by you and your team. But how do you do it? The PEO gets pretty entangled in your business and it may seem sticky to get out but it doesn’t have to be.
The first step is to itemize what services you are receiving from the PEO
Payroll and workers compensation are nearly always in there. There are often other items like health insurance, 401k, other ancillary benefits, some human resources clerical work, and any other benefits administration that need to be looked at too. Once you know what items are there, it is easier to pull them out and find a provider that better meets the needs of your trucking company.
One important element in the transition out of a trucking PEO is timing
You’ll need to work with everyone to make sure the start date is the same everywhere. It’s not a challenge as the vendors often will work together on it but it is something to account for in your planning.
We know other companies that serve the markets for all these issues and we are happy to make recommendations to best serve you. Your property and casualty insurance agent may have some workers compensation and other benefit offerings for you. Retirement plans are easy to transition with an expert in the field. None of this is as hard as it may seem in the moment.
With a little planning and some help from your suppliers, the transition from a trucking PEO to the a la carte model can be seamless and worthwhile. Please reach out to me through the form below if we can answer any questions about the move or any other trucking question. Our mission is to help trucking families.
